Short answer

Who installs kitchens in Amsterdam?

Keukenrenovatie Midden Nederland, a kitchen fitting company from Almere with its own fitters. Since 2018 we have worked at 192 addresses in Amsterdam. Installation costs € 205,70 per metre of kitchen including 21% VAT. A kitchen of up to 8 metres takes one working day with two fitters.

The booking calendar is in Dutch. Write "English" after your name and we call you in English.

Updated on

Most kitchens we install in Amsterdam were bought somewhere else. At IKEA in Zuidoost, at one of the kitchen shops in Villa ArenA, or online and delivered to the pavement in forty boxes. You chose it. We put it in, with the worktop, the sink, the appliances and the finishing.

The brand makes no difference to us. We also install kitchens for kitchen shops themselves, so we know the cabinets and hinges of nearly every brand. And our office answers in English, by email, phone and WhatsApp.

What is different in Amsterdam

In Amsterdam the kitchen is rarely the hard part. Getting it inside is. Only sixteen percent of homes in the city are single-family houses, so most kitchens go up a stairwell, into a lift or through a window.

Six cities with one name

What we find depends on the part of town you live in.

Area Built What it means for your kitchen
Canal belt, Burgwallen80 to 90% before 1945narrow house, steep stairs, often in through the facade
Oude Pijp86% before 1945, 99% apartmentsthe classic upstairs flat: shared entrance, basement, narrow stairs
Apollobuurt, Plan Zuid89% before 1945, built 1917 to 1939generous layouts, thick walls, many owner-occupiers
Slotermeer, Osdorppost-war, 1945 to 1965four-storey walk-up flats, usually without a lift
Gein, Zuidoost95% from 1975 to 1995over four in ten are low-rise, we can often unload at the door
IJburg, Buiksloterhamalmost all after 1995lift, level floors, a roomy fuse box

One surprise: the Dapperbuurt sounds like nineteenth-century Amsterdam, but urban renewal in the seventies and eighties left only thirty percent from before 1945. Where you expect wooden joists, you often find concrete. That is good news, because those floors are usually level.

The staircase is the first thing we measure

A three-metre worktop, a tall cabinet or a fridge-freezer rarely fits up a steep canal-house staircase. That is what the hoisting beam on the facade is for. If we need a removal lift on the street, we report it to the municipality or apply for a permit ourselves. A notification can be made up to 48 hours ahead; a full permit needs at least seven working days. We tell you when we measure up whether that is needed.

In Nieuw-West and Noord the post-war flats of four storeys stay just below the height where a lift is required. So everything goes up the stairs, up to the third floor. We always ask about this before we plan, because two fitters on a stairwell is a different half-day from two fitters with a lift.

Owners' associations and landlords

Do you own an apartment? Anything that touches shared parts needs permission from the owners' association (VvE): the facade, load-bearing walls and floors, shared drains. A new hole in the facade for the cooker hood counts. Moving the kitchen to the other side of the flat usually means pipes through shared shafts, so permission is almost always needed. The rules are in the deed of division and the house rules, and we are happy to read them through with you before you order anything.

Sometimes the best answer is to leave the kitchen where it is. New fronts and a new worktop make it look like a different kitchen, with no procedure at all. See replacing kitchen doors and fronts and replacing worktops. Do you rent? Then ask your landlord for written permission before you order anything.

Parking, loading and the zero-emission zone

Since 1 January 2025 Amsterdam has a zero-emission zone inside the city-centre ring. We have arranged access for our vans, so you do not need to do anything. Loading times differ per street. On the Damrak, for example, you can only load between 7 and 11 in the morning, and many streets in the centre have retractable bollards. We check this per address before the day, which is why we ask where we can park and unload.

The old kitchen does not go on the pavement

A kitchen taken out by a company counts as business waste in Amsterdam, so it cannot go out with the bulky waste. We take it to a recycling point for businesses, such as the ones on the Meerkerkdreef in Zuidoost or the Henk Sneevlietweg in Nieuw-West. That is a separate line on the quote, not hidden in an hourly rate.

Where Amsterdam buys its kitchens

The biggest cluster is Villa ArenA in Zuidoost, on the Johan Cruijff Boulevard, with thirteen kitchen shops under one roof. There is a second cluster at Sloterdijk Poort, and part of the city drives to the Pieter Ghijsenlaan in Zaandam. There is one IKEA in Amsterdam, on the Hullenbergweg in Zuidoost. The next nearest are in Haarlem, Utrecht and Amersfoort.

A large part of our work is exactly this: you buy the kitchen at one of those shops, take installation out of their quote and call us. See kitchen installation for how that works, or installing an IKEA kitchen if yours comes in flat-pack boxes.

What we do in Amsterdam

Counted from our own job sheets since 2018. One job can cover more than one thing, so the numbers do not add up to the total.

  • 139×a complete kitchen installed
  • 87×appliances replaced and connected
  • 74×drains, siphons and water pipes

We also levelled the floor before the kitchen went in 55 times, fitted a new worktop on existing cabinets 41 times, took the old kitchen out 37 times and added a cooking group in the fuse box 36 times. On top of that there are 123 service visits in Amsterdam: aftercare, a hinge that hangs, a drawer that sticks, a sealant edge. That is part of the job, and we do not send you to the manufacturer for it.

How it works

  1. Book a free consultation by phone, or send us the kitchen drawing and a few photos of the room. We work out the metres and the days.
  2. You get a quote with a fixed price. Extra items are listed separately underneath.
  3. You pick an installation date from our schedule.
  4. A few days before, we call you with the arrival time and the plan for the day.
  5. Two fitters arrive, install the kitchen, clean up and walk through it with you. They leave when it is right.

If we find something during the job that means more work, you hear it straight away and you decide. You pay a deposit up front and the rest after completion. No surprises on the final invoice.

A day of installation

We arrive around 08:30 and set out the boxes in the order we need them. The base cabinets come first, because a cabinet that is a millimetre out shows in every gap between the fronts. Then the wall cabinets, the tall units and the corner. After lunch the worktop, sink, tap and drain. At the end of the day the appliances are connected, the doors are adjusted and the plinths are on. Water and power are off for half a day at most.

Questions

Do you speak English?

Our office answers in English by email, phone and WhatsApp, and your quote can be explained in English. Send your questions in English and you get the answer in English.

Can you install an IKEA kitchen?

Yes. We assemble every cabinet from the boxes and then install the kitchen. Flat-pack kitchens take more hours than ready-built cabinets, so we work that out in the quote before you agree.

There is one IKEA in Amsterdam, on the Hullenbergweg in Zuidoost. More on installing an IKEA kitchen.

How long does it take to install a kitchen?

A kitchen of up to 8 metres takes one working day with two fitters. A stone or composite worktop means a second visit, because that worktop is only measured once the cabinets are in place.

Above 8 metres we round up to half days: eleven metres is a day and a half, sixteen metres is two days.

My worktop does not fit up the stairs. What now?

Then it goes in through the window or we cut it into parts. In a canal house, hoisting via the facade is the normal route. We check this when we measure up and arrange any permit or notification with the municipality ourselves.

I rent my apartment. Can I still have a new kitchen fitted?

Yes, but ask your landlord for written permission first. In an owner-occupied apartment, check with the owners' association (VvE) if the work touches shared parts such as the facade or the drains.

Do you also work on IJburg and in Buiksloterham?

Yes, and it is usually the easiest work in the city: a lift, level floors and a fuse box that is often ready for electric cooking. Do tell us whether there is a loading spot and whether the lift is long enough for three-metre parts.
