Kitchen installation and renovation in Hilversum

Of the towns in the Gooi area, Hilversum is the one that really behaves like a city. More than four in ten homes are apartments and almost half are rented. For our work that mostly means stairwells: shared entrances, galleries, and lifts just too short for a three-metre worktop.

That is the difference with Huizen, twenty minutes away, where seven in ten homes are houses and we can almost always drive up to the door. We work in both, and we plan a Hilversum installation day differently: more often with two fitters, and with the question in advance of which floor you live on and how the stairs run.

Four in ten Hilversum homes are pre-war

Forty percent was built before the war, and another nineteen percent in the rebuilding years from 1945 to 1965. Together almost sixty percent of the town.

In a pre-war home the inner walls are solid brick and the floors rest on wooden joists. Drilling into real brick is good for wall cabinets, but the floor is rarely level. That is not a defect. It is how they built then. So we measure the floor first and allow room to adjust. On a four-metre kitchen the difference between left and right can easily be a centimetre or two, and you see that straight away under a straight worktop.

What is in the fuse box, we only say once we have looked. In homes from before 1965 that were never updated, we usually find too few groups for a modern kitchen with induction, an oven and a dishwasher. See gas to induction and plumbing and electrics.

Dudok, and the facade you leave alone

The architect Dudok designed some seventy-five projects here, not only the town hall but whole complexes of workers' housing. Hilversum has more than two hundred national monuments, over seven hundred and fifty municipal monuments and three protected townscapes: Plan Oost, Hilversum-Zuid and the North-West villa area.

Live there, and the inside of your kitchen is your business, but the outside becomes a conversation. An extractor duct through the facade, a new opening, a vent where it shows: that does not just happen. We tell you before you order, not on installation day, and check whether a recirculating hood is a good alternative. It usually is.

Kerkelanden and the Meent: two kinds of work

Kerkelanden was built from 1966, mostly between 1967 and 1975. Low-rise around courtyards, but near the entrance of the neighbourhood there are flats of up to fourteen storeys. They have a lift, and the only question is whether it is long enough for a three-metre worktop. We check that in advance. What a worktop costs is on replacing worktops.

The Hilversumse Meent is the opposite. Built between 1974 and 1978, sixteen hundred homes, all low-rise, laid out with winding streets and courtyards. The van parks at the edge, not at your door. We charge nothing extra for that, but we plan more time.

The post-war walk-up flats of three and four storeys are the heaviest category here. They stay below the height where a lift is required, so everything goes up the stairs. Tell us if you live on the third floor and we come with the right crew.

A kitchen that lasts another ten years

Many people here are not ready for a complete new kitchen, but for a kitchen that will do another ten years. That is good work and we are happy to do it. Where Hilversum buys its kitchens

The local cluster is on the south side, on the Zuiderloswal and the 2e Loswal, with one more shop in the centre. Many people in Hilversum drive to Bussum, Naarden, Baarn, Blaricum or Almere for their kitchen. That is fine with us.
